About The MET

The Muslim Educational Trust was set up as a charitable Trust in August 1966 by some Muslim educationalists to cater for the educational needs of the Muslim children living in the UK to avail the Education opportunities given under sections 25 and 26 of the Education Act of 1944. The founder Trustees were: (The late) Mr. Afzalur Rahman (a school teacher and author of some Islamic books and Islamic encyclopaedias), (The late) Dr. Muhammad Sultan Khan Ghauri (an educationalist), Mr. Rashid Ahmad Siddiqi (a school teacher and a community activist)

Under the Sections 25 and 26 of the 1944 Education Act, parents of the children of the religious communities other than the majority Christian parents were given the right to withdraw their children from the morning school Assemblies and Religious Instruction Lessons and arrange for the alternative lessons at their own expense and the Local Education Authorities (LEAs) through the schools would provide time and space to arrange such alternative lessons. The Muslim Educational trust was fundamental in providing the school’s with teachers to cater for the needs of Muslim Children.

The Muslim Educational Trust was registered with the Department for Education (DFE) and later with Charity Commission (Registration number is 313192).

The Trust started sending teachers to state schools in 1969 beginning from London Borough of Newham and gradually it expanded its work to the London boroughs of Waltham Forest, Tooting, Tower Hamlets and further afield to the cities of Luton, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Wassail, Manchester and Huddersfield. In 1988, the Trust used to send teachers to over 70 schools in different cities of England.

The Trust was also the pioneering Muslim organization representing Muslim educational concerns in Britain. It had a very important role to play in the creation of the first Religious Studies(RE) - Islamic Studies GCSE Syllabus in conjunction with EdExcel.

The trust now focusses in publications of books that have been authored mainly by its Chairman and former Director, Prof Ghulam Sarwar.

From Our Readers

A wonderful book with brief insight on every aspect of Islam! It covered almost all the topics very beautifully and rationally. I'd highly recommend it to new Muslims, or those who don't have much knowledge about Islam or simply anyone who's interested in learning about Islam and Muslims in an appropriate way! Short and precise to go!
